gaiac Research Institute

The gaiac Research Institute was founded in 2003, with a focus on applied ecological and ecotoxicological research, as a spin-off from the Institute for Environmental Research at RWTH Aachen University. In 2025, the gaiac eco assessment GmbH was established as a spin-off of the gaiac Research Institute, which both together now form a fiscal unity.

Who we are

The dedicated team of the gaiac Research Institute and gaiac eco assessment GmbH currently consists of 34 employees in total, predominantly biologists, supported by biological-technical assistants and team assistants. For larger, seasonal projects, the team is extended as needed by student assistants.

The gaiac eco assessment GmbH is managed by its managing directors, the gaiac Research Institute for Ecosystem Analysis and Assessment e.V. is led by its managing directors as well as the association’s board. The gaiac Research Institute is a legally independent research institute affiliated with RWTH Aachen University as a so-called “associated institute”. Both institutions, the gaiac Research Institute and the gaiac eco assessment GmbH work in close and trusting cooperation with the Institute for Environmental Research at RWTH Aachen University in research and teaching. In addition, they collaborate with other institutes at RWTH Aachen University across various fields of research. The research activities of the gaiac Research Institute are also accompanied by an advisory board of external experts from universities, authorities, and industry companies.
