The species list of our field work this year is veeeeeery long. Much like this pretty smooth snake (Coronella austriaca), which we recently discovered under a snake board during one of our monitoring efforts. Snake boards are artificial hiding places used to detect reptile species in the field. Under the board, attractive microclimatic conditions are created for the cold-blooded animals. The Smooth Snake is completely harmless to us humans, but is considered “highly endangered” in NRW.
